COMIC BOOK REVIEW - Batman and Robin: Born To Kill

Easily the most iconic superhero duo of all time, Batman and Robin have always seen eye to eye. “Born to Kill” gives us a fresh new take on what has eternally seemed like the ultimate partnership.

The story starts with Batman inducting the latest Robin into his crusade to fight crime. The twist this time is that this particular Robin is his biological son; Damian Wayne. The novel presents a tense relationship between the two from the onset, which coupled with a villain looking to tear son away from father gives us an enthralling tale. In terms of plot, this novel keeps readers hooked from beginning to end, with multiple heart-stopping moments and twists and turns guaranteed to impress.

I felt “Born to Kill” allowed readers to get a superb insight into Batman’s mind as he tries to take on the challenge of raising a son whose nature occasionally goes against everything that he stands for. Alfred seems to be the only one in the entire story who has a competent understanding of what both Bruce and Damian need, although he is largely ignored.

Patrick Gleason’s artwork is quite good throughout the entire novel, especially in moments where deeper emotion is emphasised. The covers were also decent; the one I’ve chosen above mimicked the classic Dark Knight Returns style with the lightning in the background.

Favourite Panel:

People often say that this relationship wasn't authentic, but look at panels like this!

Favourite Character:

Easily Alfred. His quips throughout kept me thoroughly entertained, and he seems to be the only character that seems remotely sane!

Rating:

  • Story Arc: ★★★½

  • Character Development: ★★★½

  • Artwork: ★★★

  • Enjoyability: ★★★★

  • Re-readability: ★★★

Level: Intermediate
