With Cathy Yan’s ‘Birds of Prey’ film hitting the screens next year, I thought it would be a pretty good time to read some of the Birds of Prey comic books to see what the hype is about.
‘Trouble in Mind’ starts with Black Canary attempting to recruit members for her new team,
which initially only has herself and Starling as members. Eventually, Katana and Poison Ivy join the ranks. And just in time, as the ‘Birds’ attempt to stop a villain known as Choke from mind-controlling people. He has an army of sleeper agents that can activate at any moment, and it seems that nowhere in Gotham is safe. Along the way, however, it seems that members of the team themselves may be compromised and several missions don’t go to plan.
I actually really liked this team dynamic. I’ve always generally preferred team books as compared to solo ones, but I wasn’t sure how much I’d like this team. That being said I thought Black Canary as the leader was genius, and each member was uniquely different.
The artwork was good as well, and some of the covers drawn by David Finch were really nice. Overall, I thought this was a fun book to read, and hopefully, I’ll get the chance to read some more soon.
Favourite Panel:
The interactions between Black Canary and Starling were the best.
Favourite Character:
Starling. She was a relatively new character to me, and honestly, she was hilarious!
