Ah, the Birds of Prey. DC’s finest team of femme fatales, be they good or bad, almost every iconic female character has been in the line up at some point. In the last novel, we see Dinah Lance, aka Black Canary, lead a team consisting of Starling, Katana, Batgirl and most recently Poison Ivy.
‘Your Kiss Might Kill’, continues the story, although it’s largely made up of several different stories. We learn that Dinah killed her husband, a fact that she hadn’t told the team before. Then, following an attack by a Talon, the team head to the Amazon to save Poison Ivy’s life, with Dinah believing her to be a good-hearted soul who intervened to protect them from the Talon. However, it seems that Ivy has a plan of her own and she intends to blackmail the team into doing her bidding to take down corporations that are hurting the environment.
I think that the underlying plot twist of Dinah having a husband who she ‘murdered’ is swept under the carpet, no pun intended. I thought that it was an interesting take on an iconic character, but the following one-shots never really deal with that. In terms of character development, we learn that Poison Ivy is a bitch and Katana will cut a bitch. Ha!
The artwork was okay, I didn’t think it was bad, but it wasn’t spectacular in my opinion. The covers were also okay, however this one I liked a lot, due to its anime style. Overall, not a bad novel, but the series does need to pick up!
