Constantine is one of those characters that you either really like or you really despise. However, I’m sure that no-one would argue that he’s the best at what he does, which is dodgy deals and magic shenanigans. The New 52 created the Constantine comic, taking the titular character from his traditional ‘Hellblazer’ series.
This novel was a mixture of stories, all of them weird. ‘The Spark and the Flame’ starts with Constantine attempting to gather three pieces of a legendary magical item, ‘Croydon’s compass’. Shoutout to my hometown. However, standing in his way are a mystical group of villains who are seeking the artefact for themselves. There is also a one-shot in which Constantine tries to steal Shazam’s powers for himself and this doesn’t end too well for him.
I have to say, generally, I’m in the latter group when it comes to Constantine, I’ve never particularly liked him, however, this novel was not a bad read at all. He’s cocky and obnoxious but he is good at what he does. The character development aspect of the novel was pretty good.
The artwork was completely appropriate for the story and some of the otherworldly creatures that were drawn were terrifying. The covers weren’t too bad either, the one I chose is the one cover drawn by Ivan Reis, one of my favourite artists. Overall, not a bad novel.
Favourite Panel:
See, he’s not just a jolly English guy.
Favourite Character:
Reluctantly, it’s John. Especially in scenes like the one above.
