COMIC BOOK REVIEW - Go Go Power Rangers: Vol 1

When Boom Studios took over the creation of Power Rangers comics, a lot of people were sceptical. However, the success of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers series led to the creation of a prequel comic series titled, “Go Go Power Rangers”
The first volume of this series deals with the original five rangers; Jason, Billy, Kimberly, Trini and Zack as they adjust to the fact that they now have superpowers. Whilst Rita cooks up her usual plans to take over the Earth, the Rangers start to find it difficult to manage their personal lives with their newfound responsibilities. So when Rita sends a new kind of monster down, the Rangers suddenly find themselves in a situation where they can’t get away from prying eyes to morph and save the day.
The story itself was fairly basic and overall there wasn’t a ridiculously drawn-out plot, but the character development, especially for Trini and Kimberly was pretty good. I think the concept of doing the Power Rangers comics allowed us to see other sides to the characters that we might not have traditionally seen in the shows.
The artwork was by Dan Mora, who I think has a really cool and crisp style which worked well for this novel. Some of his covers were also pretty phenomenal, so no complaints there. Overall, despite an overarching plot, I thought this was a good read!

It’s hard to pick from a team book, but it has to be Jason for me. He takes his responsibilities as a leader to the next level!
