As I begin to gear up for the Green Lanterns to return to the big screen, I began to contemplate the numerous series about the whole Corps. Whereas the ‘Green Lantern’ series deals with Hal Jordan, and ‘New Guardians’ deals with Kyle Rayner, there was still space (ha!) for one more novel series.
‘Fearsome’ focuses on what’s happening with Guy Gardner and John Stewart. It starts with the two lanterns attempting to find normal jobs in between being heroes but when they get a distress call from a certain space sector, they head off immediately to find the cause. Enter “the Keepers”, an unknown race who have been killing Lanterns and decimating planets. What seems like an easy fight for John and Guy ends up being mission impossible when it appears that the Keepers are unaffected by the rings. Can they find a strategy to win or will the sacrifices needed, be too much to handle?
I have to say that although there is a lot of love out there for John Stewart and Guy Gardner, they’re probably my least favourite Green Lanterns. Saying that this wasn’t a bad novel at all and I thought the last issue especially made me have a real appreciation for John, in terms of character development.
The artwork was okay, in certain of the larger panels it was quite good, but the highlight was probably the covers done by Andy Kubert. Overall, a decent start to this series, let’s see where it goes!
Favourite Panel:
Seeing the Martian Manhunter cameo in this novel was a treat!
Favourite Character:
Purely because of the end of that novel, it has to be John.
