COMIC BOOK REVIEW - Jessica Jones: The Secrets of Maria Hill

As we edge closer and closer to May next year, Marvel Studios are slowly having the rights of “The Defenders” reverted back to them. One of these “Defenders” is Jessica Jones, the P.I. with super strength. In the last novel, ‘Uncaged!’, we saw Jessica come out from prison and help Captain Marvel with an undercover job.

‘The Secrets of Maria Hill’ tells the story of Maria Hill, former head of S.H.I.E.L.D., who now needs Jessica’s help to find out who’s put a hit on her. Jessica seems reluctant at first, but the incentive of money and also the chance to reunite with Luke Cage, and their daughter, has Jessica accept the shady case. But nothing is as it seems in this tale, as Jessica finds herself in the crosshairs of a number of mysteries involving body doubles and a secret that Maria Hill has spent almost a lifetime trying to hide. Will Jessica get the answers that she seeks?

This was one of those examples of a Marvel story that isn’t grand in its ambition. That being said, it’s also one of those novels that are so ridiculously confusing that for me, this was not a good read. In terms of character development, we do see Jessica adapting to her new life, and we also see her go out of her way in order to fix her broken family.

The artwork was again not my favourite, and there were two flashbacks with some art that genuinely just baffled me so much. The covers were not bad, but overall, this for me, was one of the worst novels that I’ve read, and I’m glad that this was the last novel in this series.
