Easily, my favourite Superhero team of all time, the Justice League are iconic. Are they iconic in any era of time though? Justice League 3000 was a comic series in the New 52 that looked to deal with that very idea. Needless to say, I was very excited to read it.
‘Yesterday Lives’ tells of a future, the 31st Century, where a villainous and mysterious group known as the Five have all but taken over the entire universe. In order to combat their threat, two twins, Teri and Terry who work for Cadmus, “bring back” the Justice League. However, as the novel progresses we realize, as do the characters themselves, that they aren’t the Justice League that they remember, and something must definitely be off. Added to the mix is the confusion about Ariel Masters, who claims to be their metaphorical ‘mother’, it seems that something is amiss.
On the surface, it could be assumed that either this was a novel about time-travel or it’s a novel that is unnecessarily confusing. The truth is that it’s neither and in terms of mystery, I loved this novel. I do feel that perhaps the characters could have been developed a little more, but it was the first novel, so I can be a little lenient.
The artwork was quite unique in that the colours were bold and style quite expressive. I think if this was any other novel series, I wouldn’t have liked it, but for this one, it was pretty good. This was the same for the covers which were vibrant and exciting but again suited to this series.
Favourite Panel:
Is there ever a time when they weren’t like this?
Favourite Character:
It’s hard to pick from a group series but Superman 3000, as I call him was pretty entertaining to read!
