For a long time, I’ve been avoiding reviewing this series just because it’s my favourite, and I wanted to wait for a momentous time to review this novel. With HBO’s momentous announcement that they are releasing the Snyder Cut of Justice League, I couldn’t think of a better time.
‘Origin’ is the first Justice League novel in the New 52 run. It tells the story of how the individual League members, who don’t know each other, are forced to find one another when many of them begin to stumble on enemies from another planet. Realizing that these creatures are starting an invasion, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Cyborg come together to battle these alien forces. However, unbeknownst to them, this initial invasion force is nothing when they come up against the mastermind behind this attack. This inexperienced group have to put all differences aside to save their planet.
So I’ll just start by saying that this is probably my favourite graphic novel of all time. I’ve read it a number of times, but obviously, for the purposes of this review I had to re-read it, and it does not lose any of its excitement. Seeing these iconic characters interact with each other for the first time creates for me, magic that I’ve rarely felt.
The artwork is just the icing on the cake. The legendary Jim Lee has drawn both the issues and the covers as well, and again, all of his work, this is hands down my favourite. Overall, if you want to start reading comic books and you have no idea where to start, this is the place. Absolute epic.
Favourite Panel:
There were far too many to choose from, but the initial banter between Batman and Green Lantern was too good to miss!
Favourite Character:
Again. In a team book, how does one choose? However, I will say that Batman, in this novel is both badass and hilariously funny.
