Okay, so hear me out. A few years ago one of the smaller comic book companies Boom Studios, announced they were starting a Power Rangers Comic which was set just after Tommy Oliver, defects from Rita Repulsa. I cannot explain to you how excited I was for this series.
Vol 1 starts immediately after this defection has happened. Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, is struggling to fit in with his new teammates. The team is also struggling a lot to get used to him, especially Zack. During their first mission together, the Dragonzord seems to malfunction leading to a number of people being put in danger. This culminates in Rita, sending Scorpina to gather the Green Power Coin energy in order to carry out her latest plan to destroy the Rangers. Eventually, the tension leads to a fallout between the team, just as Rita’s plan comes to fruition.
Given my love for team comics, I liked the dynamic between different characters. The show never showed us the relationship between Billy and Trini, or Zack and Tommy. I think the novel focused a little more on Tommy, but that was understandable given the storyline of the novel.
The artwork was beautiful. I really, really liked the style of each of the issues. The covers were also phenomenal, and they had a very unique style. Overall, this was probably one of the best comics that I’ve ever read and I think it easily rivals some of the novels produced by bigger companies!
Favourite Panel:
There were a few different panels that I liked, but for this first issue, it had to be this one!
Favourite Character:
Even though I do love Tommy, I think in this novel Jason really stepped up as a fair and balanced leader... mostly.
