COMIC BOOK REVIEW - Power Rangers: Soul Of The Dragon

Ever since Boom Comics started producing the Power Rangers comics, we’ve seen them churn out quality novel after quality novel. And with their success came the ability to tell other stories with beloved characters. When I heard that they had made a novel about Tommy Oliver and what happens to him once his Ranger Days are over, I was intrigued.

‘Soul of the Dragon’ tells the story of Tommy Oliver, arguably the greatest Ranger ever, who finds himself let go off, from his teaching job. Married to Kat, with a grown-up son, JJ, he tries to find a new purpose in life. But when a friend of his son, Anara, tells him that JJ has gone missing, Tommy steps into action once more. Finding out that JJ’s last mission involved tracking someone down called ‘The Witch’, Tommy fears that his age-old nemesis, Rita Repulsa is back. With the last of his Ranger powers, he sets out to rescue his son and find out just who this mystery villain is.

One of the things that I really enjoyed about this novel was that it focused on a side of Tommy Oliver that we’ve never seen in the TV shows, and let’s be honest, that’s pretty difficult to do. I also liked that it began to deal with the idea of retired Rangers. Genuinely, what does a Power Ranger do with their life after they’ve saved Earth several times? Gotta read this novel to find out.

The artwork was the one letdown in this novel for me. I wasn’t a huge fan of the style, unfortunately. It was also an odd novel in that it had no variant covers, just the one above. Overall, a cool concept as a novel, can we get some more, please?
