COMIC BOOK REVIEW - Red Hood and the Outlaws: Redemption
By The Masked Medic
When the New 52 started back in 2011, it was quite evident that the Bat-family amongst all were getting quite a priority. Jason Todd, the second Robin, now the anti-hero, Red Hood got his chance at a novel about him and the team that he formed.
“REDemption” starts with Jason getting rescued by none other than Starfire. She doesn’t remember who she is but she knows that she’s badass. Jason then goes on to rescue Roy Harper, another former sidekick, who’s in a bit of a crap situation. The three of them reluctantly form a team, and when someone from Jason’s past turns up with a mission, Jason and Roy set off to find answers. Princess Koriand’r though has her own problems when an alien enthusiast attempts to off her.
This novel divided me in a way. The plotline of this particular book wasn’t terribly exciting, however, the team themselves gel in this way that I’d not seen from many others. It’s like three misfits, that fit perfectly together. There were some pretty good flashbacks though to how these characters became the way they are which I enjoyed.
The artwork was one of the few things that I could not complain about. Kenneth Rocafort has this beautiful style which I really really loved. The covers were also amazing and on that front, I was very impressed. Overall though, it’s the kind of series that I can see becoming amazing, it just needs to pick up a bit!
I mean at their core, they’re such kids!
It’s a tough one, but in this novel it’s Jason. He plays this wounded sidekick act, but you can tell he’s got it in him to be a hero!
Story Arc: ★★★½
Character Development: ★★★
