COMIC BOOK REVIEW - Sam Wilson Captain America: Standoff

With everything going on in the USA at the moment, it seems like they could use a Captain America, and given the issues occurring there, Sam Wilson would not be a bad shout. In the last novel, ‘Not My Captain America’, Sam was struggling to deal with all the pressure that came with being a superhero who spoke up about what he believed in.

‘Standoff’ is the culmination of three different stories merging together into one massive conundrum. Through different sources, Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers all discover that S.H.I.E.L.D. have fragments of a cosmic cube and have been using to “rewrite” the personalities of some of the most infamous villains. However, it turns out that some of these villains have reverted back to their original personas, led by Baron Zemo, they attempt to kidnap the cosmic cube, which is in the form of a little girl, in order to rewrite reality to their desire.

Although the components of the story are extremely complicated, this was probably my favourite Marvel novel I’ve read to date. It had all the ingredients of a good novel; heroes reuniting, friendships being mended, villains from across the entire universe working together and a sinister behind-the-scenes plot that no one could imagine. I really enjoyed it.

The artwork in my opinion added to my enjoyment of this novel. Some of the issues had this crisp style that I really liked. The only thing that was not great was the covers, but overall, this was such an improvement to this series that I wonder how it can get better!

Favourite Panel:

There were a lot of panels that I liked, but this one stood above the rest.

Favourite Character:

So, I’ve always liked Bucky in the films, but he’s so funny in the comics. Genuinely reminds me of a Nightwing-like figure

Rating:

  • Story Arc: ★★★★

  • Character Development: ★★★½

  • Artwork: ★★★½

  • Enjoyability: ★★★½

  • Re-readability: ★★★½

Level: Advanced
