COMIC BOOK REVIEW - Sinestro: Sacrifice
By The Masked Medic
With the announcement of Dwayne Johnson’s “Black Adam” film coming to life, I thought to myself that Sinestro would be such a good character to cameo in the film. The leader of the Yellow Lanterns has always been an intriguing character and given his status as one of the greatest Green Lanterns, at some point, he’s one of the most iconic villains in the DC Universe.
‘Sacrifice’ is essentially a two-part story. The first part of the novel deals with Sinestro and his Corps attempting to fight the forces of New Genesis who are capturing members of the different Lantern Corps in order to wage war against Darkseid. One of the New Gods, Bekka, who leads the attack, attracts the attention of Sinestro. The second half of the novel has Sinestro fighting off Mongul and his Warworld. Though Sinestro seems beaten, his ring sends a beacon to bring every single Yellow Lantern to his location, including a certain New God.
I thought ‘Sacrifice’ was actually a really good novel and it highlighted Sinestro’s ability to go toe-to-toe with some of the biggest and baddest characters in the DC universe. I thought it was interesting how the novel first had him fight New Genesis who are seen mostly as good guys, and then Mongul who is a definite bad guy. It almost cements the fact that Sinestro doesn’t believe his actions to be that of a villain.
The artwork was pretty decent, but the last issue had some really good illustrations. The covers all varied, but I liked this one in particular. Overall, ‘Sacrifice’ was a good read and a very interesting case study into who Sinestro is.
He legit tried to fight Highfather. Those are some balls.
It makes sense to be Sinestro, but I think it was Bekka. Seeing her struggle to find her place, only to become a Yellow Lantern was a journey and a half.
Story Arc: ★★★
Character Development: ★★★½
