With the recently announced DCU Lanterns show getting ready to film, I’m pretty excited hopefully for the expansion of the Green Lantern lore in live-action. Although they’ve announced they have a Hal Jordan and a John Stewart, there is another character that I’m looking forward to meeting; Sinestro. I don’t know if the show will have him, but the DCU has to do him right. In the meantime, I’ll entertain myself with his comic series!
‘The Fall of Sinestro’ starts very much in the opposite vein to the name. Having cemented their place as the ‘peacemakers’ in the Universe, Sinestro and his Corps, visit Kahndaq, where one of Sinestro’s greatest allies rules; Black Adam. However, this is no ordinary visit, Sinestro intends to find out about the Pale Vicar, the leader of the Paling, an ancient force that defies emotion. However, when Black Adam takes Sinestro to the tomb of the Pale Vicar, the energy from Sinestro’s ring awakens him and unleashes hell on Earth. Suddenly Sinestro finds that he’s inadvertently jeopardised the safety of a planet he was trying to protect. Before the situation gets out of hand, Sinestro unleashes a whole host of yellow rings which find themselves on the hands of not only villains like Scarecrow, Harley Quinn, Deathstroke and Black Adam but also Superman and Wonder Woman. Surely this new army of Yellow Lanterns can do the job of defending the planet. Following this, Sinestro hands the controls of his Corps to his daughter Soranik, who was once a Green Lantern. Reluctantly she takes charge, desperate to make a change to the reputation of this Corps. The novel also ends with an issue about Lobo and his mission, which brings him face-to-face with Hal Jordan. Could it be that Sinestro’s plan to reinvent the Sinestro Corps has worked? And just where are those Green Lanterns?
I remember starting this series a while back and thinking, did we really need a Sinestro solo series? But since then I’ve come a long way and I kinda appreciate these solo series on villains. The novel is long but contains some pretty decent stories and I think the character development is the highlight. Because there is a focus on multiple Yellow Lanterns, it keeps things interesting. I will say though, that the aspect I enjoyed the most, was the integration of other Corps. I’ve always felt that is the strength of the Green Lantern-related lore!
The artwork was decent. Although the style wasn’t my favourite, the vibrancy and depth of the panels made up for it. The covers were also quite good, although this one above? So badass. Overall, this was actually a series that did sort of grow on me. Would I be lying if I said that I wanted more like this? Nope!
Favourite Panel:
Oooof. This guy is far too often underestimated as a character. But this panel just shows you that he deserves respect.
Favourite Character:
Errr… Does Sinestro actually know what he’s doing?
