Although Supergirl’s story seems identical to Superman’s, there are some differences which make Kara Zor-El stand out from her cousin. In ‘Last Daughter Of Krypton’ we see Supergirl wake up from her stasis pod, only to discover that her baby cousin, Kal is now a full-fledged hero. Her distrust of him leads to some pretty awkward interactions where she almost kicks his butt!
‘Girl in the World’ continues the story with Kara, having finally defeated “The Worldkillers”, struggling to understand how to communicate with Earth’s defence forces that she is not a threat. Luckily she’s taken in by a friendly stranger named, Siobhan Smythe. At first, it seems that perhaps Kara’s luck is changing, but after a fight with Siobhan’s father, Black Banshee, Kara realizes that she’s only putting her new friend in danger and she needs to finally accept that she’s on Earth and start building her own life. Receiving help from her cousin Kara sets out to discover the secret behind her journey to Earth.
Having watched the Supergirl TV show, I knew that Siobhan was Silver Banshee, but I liked that she wasn’t a villain in this novel. It was a good twist to have her and Kara be friends, right at the beginning of Kara’s tenure as Supergirl. I think there was a lot of character development in this novel and I liked that Supergirl isn’t yet the hero we know her to be.
The artwork was okay in this novel, there weren’t really any issues that I thought were extraordinary, however, I was a fan of the covers, some of which I really liked. Overall, this was a good novel and hopefully, it continues the way that it’s going!
Favourite Panel:
I really liked this friendship. Excited to see where it goes!
Favourite Character:
Supergirl. She’s still a raw version of the character in this novel, and it’s awesome to see how she handles all these challenges!
