COMIC BOOK REVIEW - The Fury Of Firestorm: Takeover

“The Fury of Firestorm” was a series that so far I had struggled to enjoy completely. Although he was a character that I was less familiar with, the idea of reading this third and final novel in the series did not really fill me with a great deal of excitement.

‘Takeover’ starts with a few issues showing how Ronnie Raymond and Jason Rusch are now starting to trust one another with regards to being in a joint body. However, their power set puts them in the crosshairs of Dr Megala, an old villain of Captain Atom. When he takes control of the body, Ronnie and Jason realize that their bond needs to be stronger. The second half of the novel deals with Firestorm attempting to rescue Ronnie’s mother from a number of villains including Killer Frost. At the end of the novel, Firestorm finally gets the recognition they want from Superman himself.

I think this was the first Firestorm novel that I read that I didn’t find overly tedious, despite it being ridiculously long. I think there was a decent amount of character development and I did enjoy the cameos from other heroes such as Captain Atom and Superman. I think my annoyance with the series was that I didn’t feel that Firestorm had the best motivation for doing what he does, meaning that despite being composed of two separate characters, he has no depth.

The artwork in the novel was okay, but I wasn’t a massive fan of it, and that was also reflected in the covers, all of which were average. Overall, it was a good novel to end a fairly mediocre series!

Favourite Panel:

New 52 Superman really doesn’t take any shit.

Favourite Character:

Imagine having a whole novel about Firestorm and Superman was my favourite character!

Rating:

  • Story Arc: ★★★

  • Character Development: ★★

  • Artwork: ★★½

  • Enjoyability: ★★½

  • Re-readability: ★½

Level: Advanced
