Alright, so like I said, I’m trying to get myself back into my comic books, and there are so many exciting novels out there I’m ready to start reading. I thought it was time that I returned to Marvel and I needed to explore a character that really called out to me. It should be of no surprise then that I managed to find a novel that combined both a favourite character and the current state of the world!
‘Vote Loki’ starts with Nisa Contreras, a reporter from the Daily Bugle, who finds herself one day at the conference of a presidential candidate. She finds herself talking to another reporter there, but when a group of Hydra agents attack the conference, it emerges that this person she was talking to was in fact Loki in disguise. Loki steps in to stop the attack, and in the media frenzy that follows, Loki gives his opinion on both candidates, before declaring that if he ran for President, he would lie to the faces of the people and that they’d love it. This in turn leads to Loki deciding that he will run for president and he sets out to create an unforgettable campaign. The only thorn in his side is reporter Nisa Contreras who believes the entire thing is a hoax and that Loki would be a terrible president. But in his usual trickster ways, Loki is able to change the headlines of her stories and twist her words to make them seem like praise. Despite the involvement of both Thor (Jane Foster) and Angela, Nisa finds herself unable to do anything to stop Loki. But when his followers become divided and start attacking one another, Loki laments, stating that’s not what he wants. He decides to sit down with Nisa for a full interview, promising to be honest and reveal all. Can Nisa unravel Loki’s master plan here? Or will the Trickster from Asgard manage to win the most important election in the World?
I’ve said this time and time again, but genuinely Marvel does make some pretty interesting one-shot novels. I don’t know who came up with the idea, but it’s such an entertaining but also intriguing concept. I mean, it’s the kind of thing we’d expect from Dr Doom, but Loki? It’s not a very long novel, but I did enjoy it. I know there was some involvement from the wider Marvel Universe, but I guess I expected more cameos from a novel that had Loki running for President. There was some character development in the novel, and especially in the panel below, you can see that he’s not all bad!
Okay, I know this may be a little harsh, but I’m just giving you my opinion. The artwork? Really, really didn’t like it. In certain parts of the novel, it was almost distracting me from the story. It just wasn’t my style. The covers, kind of, followed in that vein, but the one above made me laugh. Overall, not a bad novel, but odd artwork and a short story take away from what could have been a very memorable novel!
Favourite Panel:
You can see which novels the MCU are getting their inspiration from! Loved this panel!
Favourite Character:
Even though he only showed glimpses of his usual antics, for me it has to be Loki!
