Amongst DC Trinity, Batman and Superman have always received more attention than the Amazon Princess, but recently I’ve started to see that balance shift a little. With the highly successful “Wonder Woman” film that came out in 2017, people around the world are recognising the strength of this character.
‘Blood’ tells the story of a woman named Zola, who finds herself in the crosshairs of a vendetta, when she comes to find that she’s pregnant with Zeus’ child. Attempting to help her, the messenger of the Gods, Hermes, sends her to Wonder Woman, aka Diana, knowing that the Amazon will help her. However, Diana comes to learn that she too is far more closely related to Zeus than she ever imagined. As she takes on the Gods herself to protect Zola, she realizes that she must play in the metaphorical pantheon to get her way.
This was quite a different story than I had imagined for Diana. I mean, yeah we see her fighting alongside the Justice League in certain world-ending situations, but this to me showed a completely different side to her. A cunning and quick mind that many would assume that she did not have. Although there weren’t many scenes in terms of character development, the ones that were there spoke volumes.
I loved the artwork of this novel. In a way, the style seemed so simplistic, but I thought it was excellent. I also felt that this style translated into the covers and it was really hard to pick one for this review. Overall, I enjoyed what I believe was quite a different story for Diana and I look forward to more!
