Maybe it’s because I’m working now, but I often find that I come home and I’m mentally exhausted. Obviously, I need to offset some of this stress and I’ve found that watching films with my sister has helped. The only thing is, I’ve now got absolutely no threshold for films that I won’t entertain and this week, we sat down to watch the new Charlie’s Angels film.
The film sees Sabina, played by Kirsten Stewart, and Jane, played by newcomer Ella Balinska, as butt-kicking ‘Angels’ from the mysterious Townsend Agency. They’ve been recruited by ‘Bosley’, played by director Elizabeth Banks, to protect Elena, played by Naomi Scott, who wishes to whistleblow on her company’s latest project, which she knows to have dangerous capabilities. Cut to a number to slick scenes across the World, as our team try to identify who’s attempting to get their hands on this project, and more importantly, who wants Elena dead in the process?
In terms of casting, I actually thought each character was cast pretty damn well. It may not be the most popular opinion, but I really like Kirsten Stewart, and I think her particular brand of quirk, worked perfectly for her character. Naomi Scott continues her up and coming career with another good performance and I thought Ella Balinska was also great. Not sure if this was the effect of my tiredness, but I actually thought the acting, though cheesy, was completely right for the genre of film.
A lot of time, when a reboot of a semi-popular series comes along, it has only one of two particular outcomes; it sinks or swims. With this film, I thought it definitely swam. It’s slick, cheesy and its push for female empowerment is the cherry on the top. Is it the most critically acclaimed and complex film? No, but it delivers a good watch and what I think is a chance for a revival of this forgotten franchise.
For me, the highlight of the film was actually the soundtrack. I thought it was probably one of my favourite soundtracks in a really long time. Overall, I thought this was a good movie, and again, this may have been my exhaustion talking, but I would genuinely love to see a sequel!
