TV SHOW REVIEW - Jessica Jones: Season 1

Following Daredevil’s success on Netflix, the next character to get the TV adaptation was Jessica Jones. Now before the series, I had never heard of the character, so I was pretty intrigued when the show came out, as to what it was about and how similar it was to Daredevil.

The show revolves around Jessica Jones, a private investigator who spends her time taking pictures of clients of cheating partners. She is approached by a couple whose daughter has gone missing. Jessica soon learns that this girl is under the control of a man who once had control over her too. As she goes about trying to find him, she realizes that he has control over many more people in her life and she has to figure out who she can trust and who she can’t trust in order to stop him.

The series is unlike Daredevil in many ways, and the two protagonists are also vastly different. Jessica is completely impulsive and clumsy, yet she is one of the most stubborn characters I’ve ever seen. The villain, on the other hand, Kilgrave, has a similar heartbreaking story which makes you feel for him a little, but he’s creepy in a way that you want to watch on.

In terms of actors, I was not aware of Krysten Ritter, who plays the lead in this show. I thought her acting was phenomenal, it can’t be easy to play a character who’s always a mess, but still trying to be a hero. David Tenant plays Kilgrave, and he plays him excellently. He has all the charisma in the world, but his nefariousness is even greater.

In terms of the cinematography, I’d say it was not as good as Daredevil, however, it wasn’t bad either. The music in the show was excellent and heightened the atmosphere of some of the scenes where Jessica is busy investigating.

Overall, it’s a really good show. Very different from what I'd seen before, but the compelling acting would make me come back to watch more.
