TV SHOW REVIEW - Supergirl: Season 1

A pod crashing onto this planet, the inhabitant raised by the people of Earth, only to develop superhuman powers and become a hero to the world. It’s a story that is infamous. In this case, however, it’s not about Superman, but rather his older, but younger-looking cousin; Supergirl.
Supergirl’s first season tells the story of Kara Danvers, a Kryptonian, who was sent to Earth to protect her cousin Kal-El, aka Superman. However, due to an issue in space, she arrives later, by which time Superman has grown up already. Residing in National City, she decides one day that she will take up the mantle of the House of El, like her cousin and become a superhero. Her mission is to stop aliens, who have escaped from an intergalactic prison and are wreaking havoc on Earth. What she doesn’t know is behind them is a villain who hits a little close to home and when Kara discovers what is happening, she is torn between duty and her feelings.
So initially I wasn’t sure that I was going to tune into this show, possibly because the DC superhero shows that came before, such as Arrow and Flash were more my style. I was a little taken aback by how optimistic the show is, and sometimes it does feel like all rainbows and butterflies, however, it’s not a bad show to watch, or rewatch. One qualm I did have was how weak they made a certain Justice League member, who is a key character on the show.
In terms of the actors, Melissa Benoist who plays our titular character, I had seen before on Glee, where she was really good, and I have to admit it was disconcerting, for the first few episodes, getting used to this new role of hers. Peter Facinelli, from the Twilight series, who plays Maxwell Lord did a first-rate job of being a secondary villain. The cast really brings about this atmosphere on the show that it’s a family which I think works well for the nature of the character.
Since the first season was on CBS they had a bigger budget than the CW would and you could tell this was the case as the cinematography was decent in most cases. I will just mention though that their Red Tornado was awful. The tone of the first season, however, was more than adequate, even if it wasn’t really my cup of tea.
Overall, I think the first season of Supergirl was a lot better than I remembered it to be. I certainly didn’t think on rewatching it that I would be just as entertained but I felt that I appreciated the story a lot more, after watching other shows where the story lacks in certain ways.
