TV SHOW REVIEW - Titans: Season 1

As far as TV shows go, I had been looking forward to this one for a pretty long time. It had been announced that DC was making a show about the Titans a few years ago, however, the project didn’t progress as fast as expected. With the creation of DC’s own streaming service, it seemed like the perfect time to create it.
‘Titans’ tells the story of Rachel Roth, a young girl who seems to have demonic powers, and finds herself on the run from a mysterious organization. On her journey, she meets Detective Dick Grayson, a cop from Gotham who’s given up on his hero persona. Added to the mix are Kory Anders, an alien who’s forgotten who she is and Garfield Logan, a young boy who has the ability to turn into a tiger. They band together in order to stop Rachel’s father from capturing her and unleashing hell on Earth.
The good thing about TV shows is that it allows us so much more time to get to know the characters on an individual basis that we get a feel for all of them. I thought Rachel and Dick’s character development was by far the most in this season, although Kory and Gar weren’t far behind. Supporting characters like Hank ‘Hawk’ Hall and Dawn ‘Dove’ Granger were also given backstories that fed the entire experience of the show.
I thought the acting was pretty good actually, for one of these superhero shows. ‘Titans’ definitely doesn’t suffer from many of the issues that the CW shows do. Brenton Thwaites, who plays Dick, gave a very different feel to the character, that many fans have seen before, but it seemed authentic, at the moment. The actors playing the ‘Nuclear Family’ were standout for me, as their creepiness was unparalleled.
It’s pretty evident that the budget for the cinematography was quite high, although the CGI really let the show down. However, given that this was the first season on a new streaming service, I was willing to cut it some slack. I didn’t particularly agree with many of the criticisms of the show, which claimed that they hadn’t followed the source material. The fun thing about comic book adaptations is the freedom to change stories.
Overall, I really liked this show. I liked the aesthetic and feel of it all, although I do think that perhaps it could’ve moved a little faster in terms of plot. The first few episodes did drag a little. However, I’m really excited to see this show grow and develop in its upcoming second season.
