Oh man, it’s been a while since I’ve managed to get through a show, but I wanted to power through this last season of a show I’ve been watching. I’m talking about ‘Travelers’, the show about people from the future who come and plant their consciousness into people in the past who are about to die. Their mission is to stop the end of the world, and they get their instructions from a sentient computer called “The Director”. So let’s see how this show ends!
Season 3 of ‘Travelers’ starts straight after the end of Season 2. Friends and family members of the main group were told that they are “Travelers” and it looks like it’s going to be a hard thing to overcome. But naturally, the resources of the future are always there. After giving the family members a serum that makes them forget certain things, the team feel that perhaps this is the moment that they can fight back against the treacherous “Faction” and change the future for the better. Added to the mix is the fact that a scientist named Dr Teslia has created an AI called Ilsa, which the “Director” can take over to give instructions to the present. Despite their best attempts however, the FBI has figured out who the Travelers are and Agent Grant MacLaren finds himself stuck with a new partner, Agent Yates, who wants to know what he’s doing at all times. She is extremely wary of the team and their missions, and on a few occasions feels that she needs to step in. However, with the increasing attacks from the Faction, as well as their alliance with one of the Travelers’ main enemies, it seems that the walls are closing in on this group. Can they still maintain their mission and save the future? And with so many changes to the timeline, are the team still sure that their mission is the one that they were sent for?
With ‘Travelers’, I remember feeling like it was such an interesting concept when I started Season 1. I mean there are plenty of shows that do the whole post-apocalyptic world kinda thing. But this show was like, what if we did something sci-fi-based, way before it gets to that point? That being said, with Season 2, I was a little disappointed. It makes sense that after completing a few missions, things would certainly be different. I was glad to see that Season 3 returned to previous heights. By now, I was invested in all the characters and how their journeys would continue. I think the show made it obvious that this was going to be the final season because the individual storylines were fairly in-depth and there were several times where it seemed as if it was the end for some of the characters. Although I don’t want to spoil anything, I do have to mention the ending, because it left me feeling a certain way, even if I can’t tell you what that way is, haha! Look, in all honesty, when I started watching this show, I had absolutely no expectations, and that’s why I didn’t think it was that bad a show. It’s certainly worth a watch if you’ve got nothing on your list!
The main cast of the show did not change, so let’s talk about them. Jared Abrahamson and Reilly Dolman returned as Trevor and Phillip, respectively. I previously felt that their characters weren’t getting as much exposure as the other members of the team, but Season 3 does up the ante with their stories. You get to see a lot of character development which is always good to see. Nesta Cooper, who plays Carly, also had a small storyline, although for her, the big change was that Jeff, her ex-partner is overwritten halfway through the season by a Traveler, and she finds that she gets on with him well. Although my favourite character, Grant, played by Eric McCormack has some good scenes, I actually found the key storyline in this season that I felt was the best to watch was that of Marcy and David, played by MacKenzie Porter and Patrick Gilmore. Gilmore has been the longstanding supporting character to the team, but this season really sees him step up and shine on his own. For me, it was the standout performance!
Occasionally you stumble upon shows that aren’t massively advertised. In the case of ‘Travelers’ it was a show that was recommended to me, and I’m glad that I gave it a try. It’s a good example of a show that has a fairly original plot, despite being grounded in ideas that have been explored before. This final season did a good job of wrapping up storylines, although I will say that the last episode and the ending left me a little empty. It technically sets up a remake or reboot if they wanted to do it, but it was rushed, and that was the only thing I wasn’t a fan of!
This season kinda backed down on the CGI effects. I think they realised they might not have the budget for the big scenes, although there were a couple of very funny atomic bomb graphics. It’s funny because I do think that I would recommend the show to people who had nothing else to watch, but at the same time, I’m like this show really shot itself in the foot with the plot lines which became excessively complicated for even the most avid of time paradox fans!
