COMIC BOOK REVIEW - Wonder Woman: Guts

Thanks to Coronavirus, we’ve had continual delays of WW84. Who knows if we’ll even get to see it this year. Luckily for me, I still have a number of Wonder Woman novels to still get through. In ‘Blood’ we saw Diana go against Hades, Poseidon and Hera, as she looked to protect a young woman named Zola, who was harbouring another of Zeus’ children.

‘Guts’ sees that story continue, with Hades, having kidnapped Zola, being in the crosshairs of his niece Diana. With the help of Hermes, Lennox and new friends, Hephaestus and Eros, Diana attempt to trick Hades into releasing Zola. However, despite getting Zola out of one mess, Wonder Woman finds that Zola is still being targeted by Hera, and when Apollo and Artemis get involved, Diana and her allies find that they must fight harder than ever in order to protect that which they deem precious.

I have to say, I personally really enjoyed this novel and its predecessor, purely for the fact that we see Diana go up against characters that are at her power level or higher. We also see traditionally ‘good’ characters in Greek Mythology in different lights than we usually do. I felt that though there was little character development on Diana’s part, the novel did well to emphasise the growth that had already occurred.

I enjoyed the style of the artwork for this novel. On one hand, it looks quite basic, but the different stroke thickness used for each scene paints a vivid picture. I also really liked some of the covers, this variant being my favourite. Overall, a good novel, in a good series. I’m ready for more, please.

Favourite Panel:

This is Diana vs Artemis, Greek Goddess of the Hunt. Rather, this is Diana beating Artemis. That’s a big deal.

Favourite Character:

Diana is a born leader, whose moral compass is unrelenting. She was awesome in this novel!
