With the recent news that Marvel and Netflix were parting ways in their collaboration of TV shows, I assumed now would be the best time to re-watch all of the seasons. I obviously had to start with Daredevil, because this was the show that kickstarted all Marvel’s success on Netflix.
Daredevil tells the story of Matt Murdock, a lawyer who lost his sight when he was a young boy. However, he found that his other senses developed, even more, giving him the ability to sense almost everything around him. He takes to the streets as the ‘Devil of Hell’s Kitchen’ cracking down on crime in his city. At the same time, a rich and powerful businessman, Wilson Fisk, is carrying out a number of illegal activities which make him a target for Murdock. The show deals with Daredevil attempting to bring Wilson’s actions to light so that he may be stopped from hurting innocent people.
The Netflix shows for me, were always better than the Marvel Films, purely for the fact that they have more screentime to deal with each of the characters. Whilst we get Matt’s background, we also get an insight into Fisk’s, and why and how he becomes the man that he is.
Many of the actors were new faces to me, except Vincent D’Onofrio who plays Wilson Fisk. I have seen him in a number of other films and shows, but for me, this is one of his standout roles. He makes his character so utterly terrifying yet addictive to watch. Charlie Cox, who plays the protagonist, also does some fantastic acting, and I now can’t really see anyone else as Daredevil from now on.
Netflix shows often have decent budgets and this show wasn’t an exception. Much of the cinematography was very good and the stunt coordination and fight scenes were excellent. They made the show seem very Dark Knight-esque, whilst keeping its authenticity and uniqueness.
In terms of actual superhero shows, I think this has to be one of my favourites of all time and I can only hope that Marvel finds a way of bringing these characters back and integrating them into their film universe.
