TV SHOW REVIEW - Krypton: Season 1

When it was announced a few years ago that DC had plans to make a show about Superman’s grandfather, a part of me wondered if there was any need. I mean these days, everyone and their butler is getting a TV show, did we really need another based on a classic property?

Despite this, I thought I'd give Krypton a try. Season 1 tells the story of how Superman’s grandfather, Seg-El is found by Adam Strange, a time-travelling ‘hero’ and forewarned of history being re-written so that Superman may never be born. The threat in itself is Brainiac, the classic Superman villain, whose nefarious mission involves him collecting worlds across the universe. Along the way, a couple of other big names also turn up and the narrative of the show is quite fresh and new.

The character development of the initial cast I felt was excellent; you get a real feel for each of the noble houses of Kandor City, the fictional setting of the show. I also have to commend the writers for keeping the show interesting with lots of twists and turns that may diverge from the comic books, but at the same time kept me invested.

Most of the actors were unknown to me, except for Colin Salmon, who played Walter Steele in Arrow. His role in this show, however, is far more important and one the I’m excited to see develop in future seasons. Cameron Cuffe, who plays Seg also acted very well, he seems well adapted to the role and has obviously taken it in his stride.

In terms of the cinematography, you could tell that Syfy, the channel that the show is on, has a much larger budget than many of the other channels which have DC shows on. The overall sci-fi feel of Krypton makes it bearable to watch, even for those viewers who are unfamiliar with the comic book lore behind it.

Overall, I’d say this was a solid first season for a show that has much promise. Many of the iconic DC characters in the show were done so well, that I think DC films could learn a thing or two! I’m excited for the second season which is currently airing.
