COMIC BOOK REVIEW - All-New Guardians of the Galaxy: Communication Breakdown
By The Masked Medic
In 2014, Marvel took a risk and made Guardians of the Galaxy. The film was phenomenally successful and was set for two more sequels. Although not the most well-known team in the Marvel Universe, the film catapulted these characters to becoming household names. Needless to say, I was intrigued to see how the comics compared.
‘Communication Breakdown’ sees the Guardians in the midst of a heist. They’re attempting to steal an item for one of the “Cosmic Elders” of the universe; The Grandmaster. However, the Grandmaster wants more, and he sends them to steal a mystical egg from another of the Elders, his brother, The Collector. Although the Guardians do their best, the Collector has immense power and soon it seems that the Guardians are working for both brothers in a petty game against each other. Whilst all this is going on, certain members of the team have hidden agendas as they all vie for their own personal goals. Are the Guardians really in charge of themselves, or is someone pulling the strings from behind the curtain?
This novel was, in a way, almost everything that I expected from a comic about these characters. It was funny and engaging, whilst also having hidden moments where it is serious and heartwarming. Although not a criticism, it was almost predictable and there was little in the form of character development.
The artwork was completely wacky and appropriate for the novel, even if it wasn’t particularly my favourite style and this uniqueness seeped into the covers especially. Overall, not a bad novel and I look forward to seeing where this series goes!
Favourite Panel:
This is completely what I mean. They’re just them.
Favourite Character:
It’s actually hard to pick but I think I’d have to go for Rocket. He’s fearless but in a really stupid way!
